1. Our skin constantly shreds skin debris and excretes waste. The natural sebum on the surface of our face also constantly attracts atmospheric pollutant. Therefore it is imperative that we cleanse it daily. When cleansing your face, do not use soap, unless it is one designed for the face. Most soap in the market is highly alkaline, not to mention that it consists of artificial fragrance and chemicals that can strip your skin of its natural moisture.
2. It is a well-known beauty maxim that we are what we eat. Due to the fast pace of our society, many of us allow convenience to rule our lives. We regularly consume processed, mass-produced and frozen food that is readily available and easy to prepare. But a regular diet of french fries, burgers, potato chips, canned food, etc. is a bane not only to our health, but also our beauty. Such food is void of all nutrients. If you consume mainly this type of food, you will experience beauty problems such as brittle nails, pallid skin and lifeless hair. Your diet should consist of food that is high in complex carbohydrates and fibre, but low in fat. A moderate intake of protein is also recommended. Whenever possible, go for natural and unprocessed food.
3. Water is one of the most important substances in our bodies. Without water assisting in the transport of oxygen and nutrients throughout our bodies, we literally cannot survive. Besides being essential to our survival, water is also important if we want to be and stay beautiful. You may already be aware that the dermis layer of our skin consists of, amongst others, elastin and collagen. For our elastin and collagen matrix to stay plump and hydrated (which is required if you want smooth skin, luscious hair and beautiful nails), you need ample moisture. Hence, drinking at least six glasses of water every day is a beauty must. If you simply cannot stand the taste of pure water, add a zest of lemon juice to the water before drinking it. Your daily water intake can also come from blended juices. Blending banana, soy milk and a tablespoon of green plant powder makes for a yummy and beautifying drink. I also love a blend of avocado, honey and green plant powder.
4. It is no secret that the sun is our skin's worst enemy as its ultraviolet rays are the most active culprits in triggering free radicals. Free radicals cause our skin to age pre-maturely as they erode the structural integrity of collagen and elastin. You have to wear sunscreen every day even if you are not planning to spend a huge amount of time outdoor. This is because sun damage can occur even during short periods of sun exposure. When choosing a sunscreen, be sure to choose a broad spectrum one that protects you against UVA and UVB as both types of rays are harmful to our skin. If you are worried that your sunscreen will cause break out, choose an oil-free version. Also take note that you have to be generous in your sunscreen application to be truly protected.
5. Another important substance in your fight against free radicals is antioxidant. Antioxidants prevent free radicals from causing oxidative damage, which leads to the erosion of collagen and elastin. As we age, our body no longer produces as much antioxidant as it used to. Thankfully, various naturally occurring ingredients contain antioxidant, which when ingested and/or applied topically help disarm free radicals. Ingredients such as green tea, white tea, dark leafy vegetables and tomatoes are all beneficial in your fight against free radicals.
